Job Overview
The Senior Mine Geologist will lead geological investigations, data interpretation, and resource modelling for BHP’s mining projects in Mauritius. Reporting to the Head of Exploration, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to identify new mineral deposits, assess ore quality, and support mine planning activities. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring accurate geological inputs that drive operational efficiency and long‑term profitability. Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute comprehensive geological field programs, including mapping, sampling, and geophysical surveys.
- Develop and maintain 3D geological models using industry‑standard software such as Leapfrog and Surpac.
- Interpret drilling data, assay results, and geotechnical information to define ore bodies and estimate reserves.
- Collaborate with mining engineers, metallurgists, and environmental specialists to integrate geological data into mine plans.
- Prepare technical reports, resource statements, and presentations for internal stakeholders and regulatory authorities.
- Mentor junior geologists and provide technical guidance on best practices and safety protocols.
- Stay abreast of emerging geological techniques, data analytics, and sustainability standards to enhance exploration efficiency.
Required Skills
- Advanced proficiency in geological modelling software (e.g., Leapfrog, Surpac, Vulcan).
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex datasets and generate actionable insights.
- Excellent communication and report writing abilities for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Proven project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Knowledge of Mauritian mining regulations and environmental compliance requirements.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and lead field operations safely.
Education
A Master’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Chartered Geologist (CGeol) or equivalent are highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of eight years of progressive experience in mineral exploration, geological modelling, and resource estimation, preferably within the African or Indian Ocean mining context.
Salary
BHP offers a competitive remuneration package ranging from SSP 800,000 to SSP 1,200,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a retirement savings plan.
