Job Overview

The Senior Sustainable Packaging Engineer will lead the design, development and implementation of eco‑friendly packaging solutions for L’Oréal’s product lines across the African region. Working within the Research & Development department, you will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, external suppliers and regulatory bodies to ensure that packaging meets performance standards, consumer expectations and stringent environmental regulations. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the end‑to‑end development of sustainable packaging concepts, from material selection to prototype testing.
• Conduct life‑cycle assessments (LCA) and carbon footprint analyses to quantify environmental impact.
• Collaborate with marketing, product development and supply chain teams to align packaging design with brand identity and market requirements.
• Manage relationships with external suppliers, ensuring compliance with L’Oréal’s ethical sourcing standards.
• Stay abreast of global regulatory changes, industry trends and emerging bio‑based materials, integrating insights into project roadmaps.
• Prepare technical dossiers and regulatory submissions for new packaging solutions across African markets.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on sustainability metrics.
• Report progress, risks and cost implications to senior leadership and sustainability committees.

Required Skills

• Strong expertise in polymer science, biodegradable polymers, and recyclable material systems.
• Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and simulation tools for structural analysis.
• Experience with LCA software such as SimaPro or GaBi.
• Excellent project management abilities, with a track record of delivering complex engineering projects on time and within budget.
• Effective communication skills to convey technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
• Fluency in English; French is an advantage for regional collaboration.

Education

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications in Sustainable Design or Circular Economy will be considered a strong asset.

Experience

Applicants must have at least eight years of progressive experience in packaging engineering, preferably within the beauty, personal care or consumer goods sectors. Demonstrated experience in leading sustainability initiatives, managing cross‑functional teams and delivering innovative packaging solutions at scale is essential.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 800,000 to SSP 1,200,000 annually, commensurate with experience, qualifications and performance. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and contributions to the Mauritius Pension Fund.
