Job Overview

The Senior Mine Safety Engineer will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety systems for Glencore’s mining operations in the African corridor. Reporting to the Regional Safety Director, you will be responsible for ensuring that all activities meet local and international safety standards, reducing risk, and fostering a proactive safety culture. This role involves close collaboration with operations teams, contractors, and regulatory bodies to design robust safety procedures, conduct risk assessments, and oversee incident investigations. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive mine safety management systems aligned with ISO 45001 and local regulations.
• Conduct detailed risk assessments, hazard analyses, and safety audits across all active mining sites.
• Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analyses, and corrective action plans to prevent recurrence.
• Provide technical guidance and training to operational staff, contractors, and third‑party vendors on safety best practices.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, and environmental teams to integrate safety considerations into project designs and operational procedures.
• Prepare and present safety performance reports to senior management and external regulators.
• Monitor compliance with occupational health standards, including ergonomics, noise, and dust control.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives using data‑driven insights and industry benchmarks.

Required Skills

• In‑depth knowledge of mining safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
• Proficiency in risk assessment tools such as HAZOP, FMEA, and Bow‑Tie analysis.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a data‑oriented mindset.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, capable of influencing at all organizational levels.
• Experience with safety management software and incident reporting systems.
• Ability to work independently and lead cross‑functional safety initiatives.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of French is an advantage.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or NEBOSH are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.

Experience

Minimum of eight years of progressive experience in mining safety engineering, with at least three years in a senior or lead role. Proven track record of implementing safety management systems, conducting investigations, and delivering measurable safety improvements in a complex, multi‑site environment.

Salary
