Job Overview

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and underwrite high‑value corporate and commercial insurance applications, ensuring accurate risk assessment.
  • Develop and refine underwriting guidelines, pricing models, and risk selection criteria in line with market trends.
  • Collaborate with actuarial teams to incorporate statistical data and loss experience into underwriting decisions.
  • Prepare detailed underwriting reports and present recommendations to senior management and the underwriting committee.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, identify emerging risks, and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with the Financial Services Commission (FSC) regulations and internal audit standards.
  • Mentor junior underwriters, providing training on best practices and analytical techniques.
  • Support product development initiatives by providing market insights and risk evaluation.

Required Skills

  • Strong analytical and quantitative abilities with proficiency in Excel, VBA, and underwriting software.
  • In‑depth knowledge of insurance principles, policy wording, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Excellent communication skills for interfacing with clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Familiarity with Mauritian insurance regulations and international best practices.

Education

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Actuarial Science, Business Administration or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualifications or actuarial credentials are highly desirable.

Experience

Applicants should possess 5 to 7 years of progressive underwriting experience, preferably within the commercial or corporate insurance segment. Experience in the Mauritian market or similar emerging economies is an advantage.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 800,000 to SSP 1,200,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a retirement savings plan.
