Job Overview
The Chief Data Ethics Officer will lead the development, implementation, and oversight of the bank’s data ethics policies, ensuring that all data-driven initiatives comply with local and international regulations, including GDPR, CCPA, and the Mauritian Data Protection Act. Reporting to the Head of Risk Management, the officer will collaborate with cross‑functional teams—such as IT, Legal, Compliance, and Business Units—to embed ethical considerations into data collection, processing, analytics, and AI deployment. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive Data Ethics Framework aligned with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct risk assessments for data projects, identifying potential ethical concerns and recommending mitigation strategies.
- Lead the creation of ethical guidelines for AI and machine learning models used across the bank.
- Provide advisory support to business units on ethical data handling, privacy impact assessments, and consent management.
- Monitor compliance with data ethics policies through audits, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Legal team to interpret and apply data protection laws in the Mauritian context.
- Educate and train staff on data ethics principles, fostering a culture of responsible data stewardship.
- Represent the bank in external forums, industry consortia, and regulatory discussions related to data ethics.
Required Skills
- Deep understanding of data protection regulations (GDPR, CCPA, Mauritian Data Protection Act) and ethical AI standards.
- Proven experience in designing and implementing data governance or ethics programs within financial services.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a strategic mindset.
- Excellent communication skills to translate complex ethical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
- Leadership capability to influence senior management and drive cross‑functional initiatives.
- Familiarity with data lifecycle management, privacy‑by‑design, and risk assessment methodologies.
Education
- Master’s degree in Law, Business Administration, Data Science, Information Management, or a related discipline.
- Professional certifications such as CIPP/E, ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, or Certified Information Privacy Professional are advantageous.
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of experience in data governance, compliance, risk management, or related fields within the banking or financial services sector.
- Demonstrated track record of leading ethical data initiatives and managing regulatory compliance projects.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 1,200,000 to SSP 1,800,000 per annum, reflecting the seniority and strategic impact of the role. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, pension contributions, and other statutory benefits in line with Mauritian labor regulations.
