Job Overview
The Marine Conservation Specialist will lead initiatives to monitor and preserve coastal and marine ecosystems in the Bel Ombre region. This role combines fieldwork, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement to develop conservation strategies aligned with national and international environmental goals. The position reports directly to the Director of Marine Research and works closely with local fishing communities, NGOs, and government agencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field surveys to assess marine biodiversity and habitat health
- Design and implement conservation projects for coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems
- Analyze environmental data using GIS and statistical software
- Develop educational programs for local communities on sustainable fishing practices
- Prepare scientific reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Collaborate with international marine conservation organizations
Required Skills
- Expertise in marine ecosystem monitoring techniques
- Proficiency in data analysis tools (R, Python, ArcGIS)
- Strong communication skills for stakeholder engagement
- Experience in grant writing for conservation funding
- Ability to conduct independent research in remote coastal areas
Education
Candidates must hold a Master’s Degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field. A PhD is considered an asset but not mandatory.
Experience
Minimum 3-5 years of experience in marine conservation projects, preferably in tropical marine environments. Experience with community-based conservation programs is highly desirable.
Salary
350,000 SSP – 450,000 SSP per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.
